Flex Camp Cluj Napoca
Posted by cornel | Filed under Events
Together with Adobe Romania Transylvania Flex Group organized the first Flex Camp from Cluj Napoca. I presented Flash Builder and Flash Catalyst and the organizers talked about the AIR platform and some fancy game developed in house. There were about 50 attendees, and taking into account their reaction I think we will do another Flex Camp this year.
I received a nice T-shirt from the Adobe Groups – thanks guys. You can see the red bat, which reminds about an old legend:
I’ve uploaded my slides and examples here.
Oracle and JavaFX
Posted by cornel | Filed under Events
At JavaOne Larry Ellison talked about Java and about Oracle’s commitment to this language (the video can be seen here). This is very interesting because he talked also about JavaFx and about the pain of building applications using HTML and Ajax (I agree with him, at least for building RIAs). While it’s premature to talk about full Oracle support for JavaFx (which means they would compete with Flash & Silverlight), I think it will be interesting to see what will happen, taking into account that they also invested a lot in ADF (JSF based framework).
Flash Builder and Flash Catalyst Betas
Posted by cornel | Filed under Events
Flash Builder and Flash Catalyst betas are now available, you can download them from Adobe Labs. Also the Flex 4 SDK can be downloaded from http://opensource.adobe.com/wiki/display/flexsdk/Gumbo. My colleague Ryan Stewart created a screencast that shows some of the latest features, it can be seen here.
We will also have some user group tours in order to present more details, I’ll be in Cluj (6 June) and Bucharest (10 June). More details to come.
Tour de LiveCycle
Posted by cornel | Filed under Events
I remember that when I was hired by Adobe I needed a lot of time to understand the products and the business lines. One of the toughest things was “What is LiveCycle?” “Why do we need it?”. After a while I managed to get the idea however I think that’s the most complex product built by Adobe.
Greg Wilson is the one behind Tour de Flex and he was also deeply involved in the early development of the workflow engine used in LiveCycle (before Adobe’s acquisition). Together with Avoka Technologies he created now Tour de Livecycle – an application that shares the similar interface with Tour de Flex. The application is designed to do the following:
- provide an answer to the question “What is LiveCycle?” for the curious ones
- allow developers already working with the LiveCycle platform to gain a deeper understanding of it
- allow customers to better understand the platform value and what services they can use
You can download the application from this location. It’s an AIR application, and it needs an internet connection in order to access all the resources, movies and samples (in the future it will also work offline).
I encourage anyone interested in SOA or document management to take a look at it. And if you find any problems or if you have any suggestions you can post a comment.

Adobe Developer Day is over and I made an archive containing a project with samples related to remoting and messaging (BlazeDS bootcamp). You can download it from this link.
Taking into account that we received good feedback will start again a new session of bootcamps.

Jeff Vroom – moving on
Posted by cornel | Filed under Events
Jeff Vroom, the principal computer scientist from Livecycle Data Services team, has decided to move on from Adobe – more can be found on his new blog. Jeff was the architect for this product and the one responsible for its success. I wish him good luck with his new plans and I encourage anyone interested in RIA and middle tier technologies to bookmark his blog – I expect some good technical posts.
